The Amazon Basin Project builds upon the foundation laid by the GEF Amazon Project: Water Resources and Climate Change (ACTO/UNEP/GEF). This earlier initiative was instrumental in developing the Strategic Action Program (SAP) for the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) of the Amazon Basin. Serving as the inaugural regional strategy for IWRM, the SAP was collectively agreed upon and endorsed by the eight Amazonian countries in 2017.
The Strategic Action Program (SAP) is underpinned by a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and a Shared Vision of the water resources within the region. Serving as a guiding instrument for regional cooperation, the SAP directs the collective efforts of the countries towards integrated water resources management. It outlines strategies and priorities for regional action in the Amazon Basin.
In order to operationalize the SAP, the countries have opted to prioritize the most pertinent and pressing strategic actions. To facilitate this, they established the Amazon Basin Project. Since 2021, the Project has been underway, aiming to address the barriers contributing to regional transboundary challenges. Its overarching goal is to foster sustainable development and safeguard the livelihoods and ecosystems within this regionally and globally significant river basin.
