The ongoing study aims to develop a monitoring strategy focusing on the primary mercury-emitting activities significantly impacting the Amazon Basin. By utilizing the Mercury Inventory Toolkit, pioneered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2013, this study intends to provide a comprehensive regional assessment of mercury pollution levels in the Amazon Region. This assessment will involve quantifying emission sources and releases while identifying areas of risk and vulnerability to contamination.
Furthermore, the study will propose a technical training program designed to standardize the monitoring and analysis of mercury distribution across the Amazon Basin. Additionally, it will develop a course tailored for professionals from the eight Amazon countries.
This collaborative effort involves partnerships with the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement), a French research and educational institution, and the University of Brasilia (UnB). The findings from this study will be integrated into the Amazon Regional Observatory (ARO), serving as a pivotal information resource within the ACTO Amazon Information Reference Center.
