Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Amazon Basin Project (SCP)

From April 16th to 19th, directors and water authorities from the Amazonian countries are gathered at the headquarters of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in Brasilia to participate in three events held within the framework of the implementation of the Strategic Action Program (SAP) for the Integrated Management of Water Resources in the Amazon Basin. The events are organized by the Amazon Basin Project – Implementation of the SAP and the PPG of the Project Towards a Better Understanding of Amazon Aquifer Systems (AAS), for their Protection and Sustainable Management.

The event program includes the III Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Amazon Basin Project – Implementation of the SAP (SCP) on the first day. On this occasion, the CDP, the main authority of the Project, will review the progress of activities and results achieved in 2023 and will consider the approval of the Annual Work Plan, including events scheduled for this management, as well as the budget for the year 2024. In addition to the water authorities who are Focal Points of the Amazon Basin Project in the eight Member Countries, representatives of the Implementing Agency UNEP and the Executive Agency SP/ACTO will be present.

Meeting of the Amazon Network of Water Authorities (RADA)

Days 17 and 18 are reserved for the 1st Meeting of the Amazon Network of Water Authorities – RADA. On this occasion, representatives from the countries will approve the internal regulations of the new Network and appoint its President and Specialized Technical Support Panel. Created during the Amazon Summit – IV Meeting of Presidents of the States Parties to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty and included in the Belém Declaration, RADA aims at cooperation and mutual support in the sustainable management and monitoring of Amazonian water resources, with a view to guaranteeing the human right to water and revitalizing, conserving, and protecting water sources.

Regional Workshop for Presentation of the CEO Endorsement Document

The third event, scheduled for April 19th, will be dedicated to the Regional Workshop for Presentation of the CEO Endorsement Document of the Project Towards a Better Understanding of Amazon Aquifer Systems (AAS), for their Protection and Sustainable Management. The workshop’s objectives are to socialize the first draft of the endorsement request package to the Executive Director of the GEF, describe technical studies at the AAS and pilot project levels, and present progress on communication, gender, stakeholder engagement, and institutional capacity building issues.
