Santa Cruz de la Sierra hosts the III Meeting of ANWA

On April 25, the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra will host the III Meeting of the Amazonian Network of Water Authorities (ANWA), a key event in strengthening water governance in the Amazon Region. The meeting will bring together heads of national water agencies, vice ministers and directors of water resources of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) Member Countries with the objective of advancing the implementation of the RADA Work Plan and consolidating essential tools for the sustainable management of water resources in the basin.

Created on August 6, 2023 in the preparatory process of the Belém Summit, the ANWA was officially established by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the ACTO Member Countries with the purpose of strengthening cooperation in water management in the Amazon. Its creation responds to the specific socioeconomic and environmental challenges of the region, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and the mandates granted in the Belém Declaration. Since its installation in April 2024 in Brasilia, ANWA has worked on the consolidation of regional protocols for monitoring, cooperation and mutual support, contributing to the revitalization, conservation and protection of the region’s water sources.

Avances en la ejecución del Plan de Trabajo

At this third meeting, participants will review progress in the implementation of the RADA Work Plan and adopt key documents for regional water management, including:

  • Four monitoring protocols for the Amazon Water Quality Network and the Amazon Hydrological Network, consolidated by the ANWA Specialized Technical Support Panel.
  • Amazon Capacity Building Plan, designed to strengthen technical, technological and institutional capacities in the region.
  • Preliminary structure of the White Paper on strengthening the role of ACTO in regional coordination for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Amazon.
  • Strategic recommendations within the framework of the RADA objectives to guide future regional cooperation actions.

The meeting will include plenary sessions moderated by the RADA Chair, currently Bolivia, presentations on the status of implementation of the Work Plan and deliberations on the documents to be adopted. In addition, key ACTO initiatives related to the implementation of the Strategic Actions Program (SAP) for the Integrated Management of Water Resources in the Amazon Basin will be addressed, such as the Amazon Basin Project – SAP Implementation and the new Amazon Aquifer Systems Project, as well as participation in COP30.

The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and the results are expected to contribute significantly to the consolidation of a regional water governance mechanism, based on shared principles and compatible management tools among the countries of the Amazon Basin.
