By invitation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), through the Amazon Basin Project: Implementation of the Strategic Actions Program (PAE), participated in the annual meeting of the Working Group on Hydrology and Water Resources in South America, held in Asunción, Paraguay, from November 29 to December 2, 2023. On this occasion, representatives from the WMO expressed interest in cooperating with the Amazon Regional Observatory (ORA) of ACTO, a reference center for data on the Amazon that facilitates the flow and exchange of information among institutions, government authorities, the scientific community, academia, and civil society of the Member Countries.

ACTO’s participation in the WG-HWR meeting was within the framework of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both institutions for the exchange of information and consultations on matters of mutual interest, particularly on scientific, technological, and developmental issues, where cooperation can promote the objectives of the parties.

Naziano Filizola, Senior Specialist in Water Resources Monitoring of the Amazon Basin Project / ACTO, highlighted the potential synergies and cooperation opportunities between the World Meteorological Organization’s Hydrological Observing System (WHOS), a WMO platform that facilitates access to global hydrometeorological data, and the Amazon Regional Observatory of ACTO.

“This system of the WMO can be leveraged in the Water Resources module of ORA, currently under development. For this, we will need to deepen our understanding of it and evaluate ways in which it can interact with ORA,” Filizola asserts, who is the expert responsible for the future consolidation and incorporation into ORA of the Integrated Regional Platform for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Amazon Basin, within the framework of the Amazon Basin Project (ACTO/GEF/UNEP/GEF).
