In partnership with the Brazilian National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA), the Amazon Basin Project has launched a free online course entitled “Tools for Gender Equality in the Formulation of Water Management Policies, Plans, Programs, and Projects,” an initiative aimed at promoting gender equality in water resource management in the Amazon Basin.

Available on ANA’s teaching platform, accessible through the Amazon Basin Project website, the course is part of the actions carried out under the Strategic Action Program (SAP). The initiative reinforces the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization’s (ACTO) commitment to sustainable, inclusive development and shared water management in the Amazon.

Strategic training for equitable water management

With a workload of 20 hours, the course is self-managed and asynchronous, allowing participants to organize their studies within a period of 5 to 60 days.

Its content is divided into six modules, structured in a practical and progressive manner:

  • Module 1 – Introduction: presents the context of gender inequality and strategies for mainstreaming it in water management.
  • Module 2 – Diagnosis: highlights the importance of initial analysis and the use of tools for gender-disaggregated data collection.
  • Module 3 – Design: uses agile methodologies, such as Design Thinking, to structure gender-sensitive projects.
  • Module 4 – Implementation: offers tools for implementing actions that promote gender equity.
  • Module 5 – Monitoring and Evaluation: presents methods for monitoring and measuring the impact of projects.
  • Module 6 – Conclusion: consolidates learning with a final assessment and certificate.

The Gender Scanner

The central tool of the training is the “Gender Scanner,” developed in 2021 by CEPAL-GIZ, which allows for the assessment and qualification of the incorporation of a gender perspective in water-related plans, policies, programs, and projects.

The Scanner can be applied strategically in the different phases of these instruments, such as diagnosis, formulation, implementation, and monitoring.

The tool provides an overview of the project’s gender approach, allowing for the identification of whether it is blind, limited in related issues, sensitive, or transformative.

Target audience and certification

The training is aimed at operators of plans, programs, and projects within the SAP, public servants, members of NGOs, international cooperation agencies, and others interested in promoting gender equity in water resource management. Participants who complete all activities and achieve the minimum pass mark will receive a certificate issued by the Amazon Basin Project and ANA.

Access and languages available

The course is available in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, expanding its reach to professionals from various countries in the Amazon Basin.
