In October, the Amazon Basin Project launched a series of training workshops on water management tools for technicians and water resource managers from government institutions in Amazonian countries. The goal of these training sessions is to improve understanding of the principles and guidelines for the governance and management of water resources in implementing the Strategic Action Program (SAP) and developing National Action Plans (NAPs). The workshops have discussed the proposal to promote the alignment of policies, regulations and legal frameworks based on the definition of guiding principles and concrete tools for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Amazon Basin.

To achieve this objective, the training sessions provide participants with a regional perspective on IWRM in the Amazon Basin, from the Andes to the Atlantic, using the Source-to-Sea approach. They also explore the potential of the Global Water Partnership Toolbox (GWP Toolbox) and its adaptation to the Amazonian context.

Toolbox: A Global Platform for Integrated Water Resources Management

The GWP Toolbox, introduced during the training series in the countries, is a global knowledge platform designed to support the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Its goal is to provide a space for sharing experiences, disseminating best practices, and connecting various stakeholders involved in water management worldwide, promoting significant improvements in the field.

The platform organizes key concepts, pillars, and components of IWRM, case studies, and practical guidelines for addressing water management challenges. It also includes reference documents, publications, and a list of online thematic communities. This structure not only informs but also fosters discussions and continuous improvement in water management across diverse contexts.

Carlos Saito, a professor at the University of Brasília, Brazil, and an interdisciplinary researcher in environmental education, spatial analysis, and water security, explains that “the Toolbox’s integrative approach and comprehensive knowledge base are indispensable for professionals, managers, and decision-makers interested in promoting more efficient, sustainable, and collaborative water resources management globally, especially in these times of climate change and growing water challenges.”

Permanent IWRM Coordination Mechanism

With the aim of supporting the development of a Permanent IWRM Coordination Mechanism within the structure of the Amazon Network of Water Authorities (ANWA), the Amazon Basin Project – SAP Implementation applied questionnaires to the training participants. These questionnaires were designed to identify common principles, support diagnostics, and propose advancements in integrated Amazon basin-wide management. This process considered institutional frameworks, existing management mechanisms, and their operationalization.

The analysis and systematization of the collected information will be carried out by the Regional Coordination of the Amazon Basin Project. This effort aims to provide an overview of IWRM in the Amazonian context and strengthen regional cooperation to implement the Amazon Basin Strategic Action Program under ACTO.
